What is Remembrance Day?

Remembrance Day in Canada is observed on November 11. At 11:00 am businesses and schools usually stop for a moment of silence to show respect for all of the Armed Forces members who have risked their lives to ensure Canada remains a safe country. This day was specially chosen as it marked the official end of World War 1 in 1918. Remembrance Day ceremonies are held in schools or public places to pay tribute to fallen soldiers who have lost their lives while serving their country. These ceremonies are also a reminder that conflict continues to exist and armed service members are currently stationed around the world to help out in those areas. During these ceremonies people often remember Canada’s role in these major wars:

  • First World War 1914-1918

  • Second World War 1939-1945

  • Korean War 1950-1953

Canada’s involvement in other conflicts and peacekeeping missions are also discussed and remembered on this day.
