Reflecting : Improving Word Choice

Image
After doing word choice for writing poetry , we are going to reflect back to what you wrote.  REFLECTING Reflecting is to think deeply or carefully about.  Example: At the end of my teachings day, I reflect back of what worked or what didn't work. I think about how else can I teach so that my students understand.  I want you to watch this short video on reflecting : Loading…

Focus on Writing: How to Improve Word Choice: December 17/20

Image
How to Improve Word Choice  : We will start with a video on word choices. Today's lesson focuses on writing and using words that improve your writing.  Here's a poem that we will use : Fear of Spiders Poem by Karri The spider's legs crawl across the page. I hear the loud screams inside me. My heart races. Now we need to rewrite our poem to make it more descriptive. Start with the title: I remember a movie where the main character was afraid of spiders. His condition was arachnophobia. I think arachnophobia is a more precise word to describe what the poem is about, so I will change the title to arachnophobia. Read the first sentence. Pause and say: I think this line would be better if I described the spider's legs. There are a few words I can think of....hairy, skinny, black, dangly. I will choose dangly. I want to make this poem scary .  I think instead of the word " crawl", I'll change it to " creep". They both mean nearly the same, but creep m

The Effects of Outliers on Average December 14,2020

Image
The Effects of outliers on average Here is a review of what you have learned already: What are mean, median, and mode? They are measures of central tendency or averages. What is the mean of a set of numbers? It is the sum of data values divided by the number of data values.  What is the median of a set of numbers? It is the middle number when numbers are arranged in order. What if there is an even number of numbers? The median is the mean of the two middle numbers. What is the mode of a set of numbers? It is the number that occurs most often. Is there always one mode? No, there may be more than one mode or there may be no mode.  What is the range of a set of numbers? It is the difference between the greatest number and the least number.  Outlier: a number in a given set of data that is significantly different from the other numbers.  An outlier is much greater than or much less than most of the numbers in a data set.  Outliers sometimes occur as a result of error in measuring or recor

Median and Range

Image
Today's lesson is all about median and range.  Median : is the middle number in a given set of data. example: 9,5,6,8,3 Step 1: Rearrange the numbers from least to greatest. Step 2: 3,5,6,8,9 Step 3: Cross off the numbers starting from left, then right, left then right, until you come up with only 1 number 3,5 ,6, 8,9   In my case I underlined and made the numbers darker. So, the middle number here is 6.  The median is the #6. In some situations there maybe more than 1 number. If there are two middle numbers, you add both of them and divide by 2 to get your median. ex. 4,1,7,6,2,8 Step 1: Rearrange the numbers from least to greatest.              1,2,4,6,7,8 Step 2: Cross off the numbers starting from the left to right, left, to right. In my case, I will make the numbers darker and underline them.             1,2, 4,6, 7,8 Because there are two numbers left 4,6,you add the two 4+6=10 , then divide by 2, 10/2= 5. The median is 5.  Remember that you can use a calculator.  Range: to

Mean, Median, Mode

Image
Please watch video on  Mean, Median, and Mode. We are only focusing on Mean and Mode today. When solving problems, you may use a calculator.  Definitions: Definition of Mean: THE AVERAGE OF ALL NUMBERS: ARRANGE ALL THE NUMBERS FROM LEAST TO GREATEST, THEN YOU DIVIDE BY THE NUMBER OF NUMBERS. FORMULA:  SUM OF TERMS             =  MEAN                         NUMBER OF TERMS Example:   9,4,3,4 rearrange the numbers from lowest to highest                   3,4,4,9                        Add all the numbers together, 3+4+4+9= 20                         Count all the numbers we have  altogether, which is 4 Now divide 20= 5                      4 The mean is 4.  Definition of Mode: the number that occurs most often. example: 3,4,4,9.   What number do you see often?                                              4                                        The mode here is 4  because it appears more than once.  Remember that you can use the calculator.  <iframe src="https://docs.google

Journal Writing December 14,2020

Hello Grade 7's, Today we are going to focus on our daily journal. I'll write to you first and then you can respond. Dear  students,      I hope that you are all doing well and remaining to be positive about school. It is now December 14, 2020, and oh so close to Christmas.  How many of you know the true meaning of Christmas? This was the day when Jesus was born. He was born in a stable as there were no hotel rooms for them to stay. The brightest star shone over them when Jesus was born. On December 21st, the two largest planets, Jupiter and Saturn will align to create what's referred to as the " Christmas Star" or the " Star of Bethlehem" . Keep an eye out 45 minutes after sunset where the Star of Bethlehem will shine for the first time since 1226. I'm totally going to watch out for this.      During this time at home, I have been busy caring for my mom and  granddaughter. I'm always busy doing things. What have you been doing at home? What do
