Median and Range
Today's lesson is all about median and range.
Median : is the middle number in a given set of data.
example: 9,5,6,8,3
Step 1: Rearrange the numbers from least to greatest.
Step 2: 3,5,6,8,9
Step 3: Cross off the numbers starting from left, then right, left then right, until you come up with only 1 number
3,5,6,8,9 In my case I underlined and made the numbers darker. So, the middle number here is 6. The median is the #6.
In some situations there maybe more than 1 number. If there are two middle numbers, you add both of them and divide by 2 to get your median.
ex. 4,1,7,6,2,8
Step 1: Rearrange the numbers from least to greatest.
1,2,4,6,7,8
Step 2: Cross off the numbers starting from the left to right, left, to right.
In my case, I will make the numbers darker and underline them.
1,2,4,6,7,8
Because there are two numbers left 4,6,you add the two 4+6=10 , then divide by 2,
10/2= 5. The median is 5.
Remember that you can use a calculator.
Range: to find the range of a given data, you take the highest number and subtract it from the least number.
ex. 95,92,87,85,80,78,76,73,72,70,66,54
Step 1: Rearrange the numbers from least to greatest.
Step 2: 54, 66,70,72,73,76,78,80,85,87,92,95
Step 3: Look for the highest number which is 95, look for the smallest number which is 54.
Step 4: Subtract the two numbers: 95-54= 41
The range is 41.
